There has to be a little bearing in the flywheel where the primaer axle of the gearbox goes in, (in a 2cv it is; so it has to be in there too) is it in? and is it in good condition?

In the 2cv it's a brass/bronze (yellow) bush, but it doesn't do anything unless you depress the clutch, the rest of the time the flywheel and gearbox input shaft are 'fixed' together by the clutch.
High pitched squealy noises rarely come from inside an engine, the oil and crankcases seem to damp them out. Noises come from things vibrating, heavy bits of engine don't vibrate fast enough to create high pitched noises, my money's on something relatively light rubbing either on the pulleys at the front or the flywheel at the back.

I've got another one

Maybe your toothed wheel from your starter engine doesn't go back in the parked position (it is now rubbing against the flywheel) this gives defintively a screaming sound. Is it the right starter engine for Gs(a)

Well I keep on guessing............ till we fix this...

Ah, is that what they're called these days? In that case, I'm off out to de-ice the cars and, no doubt, freeze my "outboards" off again! ;)

Ok, Engine and Box are back out again, and looks like (especially looking at the Pics) The clutch Plate/Pressure Plate has been rubbing on the spring of the Clutch Fork!!!!!!!!

So its looks like it has to of been the wrong Clutch/pressure plate supplied???????

But in removing the lump, I noticed the gearbox input shaft was very wobbly!!..So cracked the front of the gearbox off and the seal was in the depths of the gearbox. Also looks like the shaft itself is slightly bent towards the front!! Bugger!!

Anyone got a spare Engine 1220 or 1299 and a 4 speed box I could have??
