Coincidence! I've been listening to this today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKUBTX9kKEo Fantastic!

One of my all time favourite Daltrey songs is this onehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_6lCaqeBFQ The lyrics have a certain resonance to how I feel when reflecting on my early past. ;)

James,
no thermometers down your way, then?

All the 2CV, Dyane (& Visa) engines round here have had their winter kit on for weeks now, including the 2 which were MOT'd last week and those which will be tested next week...

Yeah, Giving It All Away is one of those songs that I suddenly "got" as I reached middle age. Funny thing about The Who is that I never get tired of listening to them. I've got the original 1973 Quadrophenia vinyl album somewhere here, with its amazing black and white photo story. Time to dig out the turntable, methinks...

Here's another track that gains resonance for me as I get older. It's a long way from The Who, and is just about the only track by this band that I can stand... but by god its a goodun (imho ;) ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1wg1DNHbNU (The vid's a bit ridiculous, so maybe just shut your eyes and listen to the song!)

With regard to the muff dilemma, I fitted mine on Friday, and I've been snug and toasty today on my jaunt in the countryside. So I say: muffs on!

there surely cannot be a gas appliance that will allow gas to flow when not lit?

Every gas hob I've ever used has allowed gas to flow without a flame. Our oven has a very strong spring on the door, and it's a sod for blowing out if the door is allowed to slam when on a low heat. The gas keeps flowing!

IIRC from school, the gas we get in our homes is basically methane, which is odourless naturally. The 'smell' is added before it reaches us.

I've a three bar grille fitted so i'll have to lash something up with cable ties in the morning then, or do like I did previously and put a couple of strips of baco foil over it a-la virtually every car you saw in the winters of the 1960's.

That's interesting. I know the song but had never actually listened to the metaphysical lyrics. I'm having a Joe Cocker day today, so here's another that helps let that old Jack Daniels slide down rather too easily. 8-)
