Grasshopper Mark 5,
most of the knowledge which you seek about clutches should be available here, except that any references to 'asbestos' need to be ignored nowadays...

As for your final question, the answer to this will never be divulged by any female of our species, I fear.

What's a 2cv clutch made of then?
Presumably some different material if it doesn't need oil?
Why don't bikes use the same material?

And how can her hands possibly be that clean after replacing the friction pads??

Nice, if I'm not much mistaken that was a Honda CBX1000 (6cyl behemoth). But what strikes me as most interesting is that the clutch casing behind the engine is part of the original unit construction engine and gearbox. The crankcase must have been cut off, the front sealed up, and some sort of primary drive fabricated on the other side.

Seem to be quite a few people producing things along similar lines, several in the UK.

Well, it's done several hundred miles all ready, and it seems to work ;)

I don't think he's to concerned about the long term health of the engine...

Fair enough, but long term you will get problems, the oil hydrogenates, and causes problems!!!
Also he will find all the pipes will go in bendy, and stiff, the best thing to clean veg oil off things with is petrol or thinners!
