Post Re: this years MOT questions
I have metal plates fitted to my '89 2cv, never had an issue at MOT time.

Post Re: this years MOT questions
I am a bit fussy about number plates. I think:

1) They look cack if mounted on the bumper. Plus the bumper is for bumping/being bumped ----> smashed plate?

2) They look cack (on all old cars) if in post-2001 font

3) They look cack if mounted on stilts (sorry Jonathan)

4) They look cack if they are black and white/black and silver on anything post '73.

5) They look cack in "euro" fonts, script etc

6) They look cack with the little flags and logos.

The curve of the bonnet is only very slight and a "normal" plastic should cope. I'd break the law and fit older style plastic or pressed ally plates in the correct font (or as near as) in preference of "proper new present your V5C at a proper place" wrong looking ones.

But of course all these things are based on my preference and its up to you. ;)

Also, like Adrian's post, I thought all new plates (including replacements issued for older cars) have to be in new style font/size.

I fail to see the logic in this. The MOT is a standard to which your car should conform at all times. If the plate is an MOT fail, you shouldn't be driving round with it. The simple fact is that any bored policeman can give you a tug for minor infringements. Why give them an excuse?

An MOT isn't a once-a-year highpoint to aspire to, James. It's the _absolute bare minimum_.

There's no law stating that. The only reason that the likes of Halfords issue new style plates is because they only have the fonts/plates for post 2001 plates. If you find a supplier who has the means to issue you with an "age appropriate plate", then you can fit that.

What a lot of debate about number plates ... who cares? I for one had no idea there was a different font for older cars, and now I do know I remain massively indifferent. They're only number plates. :?
