Place the front number plate on brackets so it stays straight.

There is more than enough flex in a plastic number plate to curve round the bonnet. If it worries you put it in some warm water, but I really don't think it is necessary. Never managed to break one yet.

Number plates are about a tenner, just buy a new one every year if you have to.

I got some metal ones made up for my 75. Bend much easier and look much better than the plastic ones. Don't forget that they're for 'show use' only though ;)

Pressed plates are perfectly legal. You can't fit black plates to something newer than 1973. But you can get white and yellow pressed plates which are fine up to 2001. Framptons do them.

I bought a pair of pressed alloy number plates through eBay for my yellow 2cv - It's the 2nd time i've used the guy, & for 20 quid all in including delivery you can't complain.

You're thinking about the fitment regs there, but not the supply regs. Any plates supplied since 2001 must conform to the "normal" style.

Nope, you can buy old style plates for cars that are entitled to wear them perfectly legally. The legislation isn't retrospective.
