Maybe a picture or two of your carb?
If the ball and spring have managed to escape, it suggests that the stop which limits forward travel of the choke cable and fast idle cam may be missing.

the other question too is that how on earth have I done around 1100 miles without it since it felt out? And how the f*** has a tiny ball bearing and spring not just gone straight down the drain at the side of the road :?

Next time I want to retrieve something that gets dropped it will be sod's law that it'll roll down the side of the engine and bounce into a dog's eyeball or something, never to be seen again, typical...

As promised, two pics of the choke setup on my 26/18 carb.

Thanks Ken also for pointing out to me about the jet sizes, I've yet to fit them, but fingers crossed it will be able to tell me whether thats whats causing the dirty back wheel and the below average mpg.

Alkie,
looking at your pictures, that stop is missing.
There should be a steel rod, with 2 grooves in it, screwed into the carb body near to the fuel inlet.
If you push the choke fully 'off', can the part which is mounted on the choke butterfly spindle slip out of contact with the peg on the fast idle cam?
If that does happen, the choke would be fully on...

ken.

Thanks James, its on pretty tight, very hard to get off, but I suppose a small jubilee clip wouldn't hurt!

I know which one you mean, its clearly visible in Old Nail's photo. When the choke is fully off it can't slip out at all. Obviously I'd like this part and want my carb to be complete, but I take it I'd have to find a second hand carb. I might do that anyway, get a second hand 26/35, as mine is a 18/26, I can't find any diagrams or info about it on the web. How different is the 18/26 to the 26/35?

I'm still confused as to where the ball bearing and spring goes, when I take the carb off later this week to change the jet I'll have a proper look. I'm half tempted to ask Father Christmas for a new carb, considering the miles I'm putting on the van. I can see it as part "19" on the diagram, but can't see what its actually acting on or being held in by.

26/35:

It's out of the parts manual. Download it from 2CV Stuff
