Rhythm Thief,
you ain't kidding about it being dangerous, as just 10ml of methanol can result in blindness...
Who needs Sharia law, when a kangaroo court will do a harsher job? :(

ken.

Two or three of us waited until he went to the loo, then poured half of it away and replaced it with screenwash. Probably very dangerous, but it seemed like a good idea then.

I know this now. Back then I was ... errr ... 23, and a lot less worldly wise. Besides, he'd poured five gallons of my beer away by leaving the tap open on the barrel so blindness was the least of his worries ;) . Anyway, he could still see the next day.

just out of interest, can you remove a gear box / engine without having to change the discs, or to much fiddling?

James, the discs are "inboard", which means they are not behind the wheels but next to the gearbox and attached to the 'box via the drive-shafts. I think the brake calibers are fixed to the 'box. It's just a case of disconnecting the drive-shafts and the 'box can be removed complete with discs and calibers.

yep, I reckon I know how you felt, probably because of some types who'd gate crash parties my circle of friends used to hold in Leeds, back in the early 70s.
It wasn't until you were clearing up the next day that you'd realise just how much of your bits and pieces had gone walkabout. Check your favourite cassettes (those were the days ) and a fair few of the boxes would be empty... :(

The only one I ever caught in the act was heading out of the house dragging my bike, still chained to a hall table. We left him attached to the old railings outside for a few hours in mid-Winter ;)

If anyone is ever tempted to drink methanol, even for a dare, it's worth knowing that the real damage probably won't kick in until 24 hours later, when your body will have metabolised it into formic acid.
The symptoms mimic those of an alcohol hangover, but the consequences aren't the same.

so after removing callipers do you need to bleed brakes? also whats the service routine on brake fluid, ive never changed mine,
my brakes felt so wooden the other day when we had a frost

Yes, if you disconnect any pipework on your callipers you'll need to bleed your brakes. I suppose it's possible to unbolt the callipers from your gearbox and leave all the pipework hooked up, but that'll put strain on the pipes and for the miniscule effort involved in bleeding brakes it doesn't seem worth the bother.
Not sure what the service interval on brake fluid is, but if yours hasn't been changed in 25 years it's probably worth doing. Certainly won't hurt. It probably won't make much difference to how your brakes feel though.

:D Thieves are the worst sort of people. Especially bike thieves. Sounds like poetic justice to me.
