There's a hole (which others have described) in the engine casting, which lines up with the one you found in the flywheel when the flywheel's at the right point.
The reason Haynes says to connect the test light between the points wire and earth, is because their idea of a test light is a bulb connected in series with a torch battery. The way Sean's described is easier though, and you don't need to find a battery!

Also why noy one wire on battery pos then earth it on points, then no ignition needed, at all surely?

you need the iggy on and bulb in place of the coil between the 2 leads.
Sean Works for me, and always has. One end of my test lamp wedged in the alternator bracket, t'other end clipped to the points to coil lead. The light goes on and off as the points open and close.

or multimeter? really sorry about the kuffuling, when you said put them between them i thought you meant on the coil, not on the ends of the wires, i may go straight from battery to save faffing, off to do timing now! wish me luck

right poitns done, now just to do timing, wasnt certrain on whether the light should be out at firing point or not, so re read it understood if and off i go again
