bugga, if theres a fuse, check it, start simple, is the wiring to and from the alternator ok? is volt reg plugged in? (dont know if you un plugged it would it simply not charge at all? and if you cant et an alternator, do the next best thing, charge your battery every few days and if youve got a jump start carry it with you, oh and hand crank the car as starting it uses the most power, (if you dont have a jump start battery pack)
also another tempory idea is if you have a 12v solar chager kicking around (there not cheap mind) stick one of those on while your at work

another headlight check to do, is when you turn the headlights on, the engine revs will drop where the alternator kicks in to feed the battery with power, well, mine does anyway

if it was me id stick the battery on charge over night or tomrow after doing the checks with voltage,

Update- did a test with the multimeter all seems fine, checked the water levels in the battery cells, two are fine the rest are low, I think it's a combination of the battery going and something wrong with the wiring between the indicators breaks and sidelights. Tried it all again and everything seems to work fine, wether the rain had something to do with it I'm not sure, I shall hunt the wires down tomorrow and see if there is something wrong.

I had the earth lead come off the gearbox once on the Ami, that lead to most of the electrics dying when I braked hard then returning to normal as soon as it came to a stop. I might be wrong but that was similar to the problem you describe.

i noticed a nice array of years of shit (probably from the brake discs?) all over my gear box and earth lead..

Well I checked it, it's still attached but I might take it off and clean it, if it hadn't been raining all morning I'd have started tracing wires. something ain't right.

I did forget to reattach the earth on the gearbox one before on another car thinking about it, but the car wouldn't start or do anything fullstop so surely it can't be that one, or maybe it's a compilation of things, ah well it seems to work now so we shall see what happens
