What are best replacements for original front silencers?
Citroen ? or aftermarket/
What about SS? What are approximate costs? Is it worth it, we seem to be galvanizing our snails for future generations.
Is anyone producing the modified cross box described earlier in this forum?

I have doubts about SS systems, I've had them on other cars and they are too brittle and fatigue easily, but I've never had one on a 2cv so it may not be a problem. Otherwise I'd use whatever ECAS are selling.

I put an ECAS Stainless Steel system on my 1988 2CV when I bought it new.
I took the new standard system off and put it on wifey's old Dyane.
That SS system is still on my car,although I have to replace the cross-box every three years or so .......stainless cross-boxes were'nt around in 1988.

Maybe "tightening" the rubber hangers with a strategically placed tie-wrap could restrict movement,and prevent a brittle system cracking [as Russell suggests may happen] .....but I've had no such problems.

Just as an "aside" ......a 'bike forum I use recommends painting the [our] exhausts with B&Q aerosol Barbeque Paint .....it seems to working with our 'bike exhausts,so I tried it on the latest cross box which I fitted [only this year,so only time will tell] .....although it'll probably only slow the rust process down a little,as car exhausts rust mainly from the inside.

I did my crossbox with that stove black paint and it's held up well apart from high up where it connects to the exhaust stub.

Ellie's car's had a Stainless system on it since probably the early '90s. No problems with it whatsoever.

Fair enough, I had several SS three branch manifolds on Minis which lasted three or four minutes, even with heavy duty top engine steadys. That's why i doubted it. Obviously different resonances and stresses to a 2cv though.

I have 'some' experience with stainless exhausts, and as Russ says, stainless is brittler and more prone to cracking. Mild steel crossboxes often suffer from the brackets, and the flange to the swan neck cracking off. That may be as much to do with bad fitting leaving them under tension, but I think I'd avoid a stainless crossbox. Also I think they're about 259Euro (Der Franzose), mild steel ones are around £40-£50.

It may be that the stainless ones are made with more care,(they certainly look nice) so maybe they'll fit better and be less likely to crack, but at that price difference I wouldn't be finding out.

For the back section I'd have no reservations about stainless, except the price.
