For information, 175/65 15 are the standard size fitted to lower spec bmw minis, and thanks to mini owners upgrading to bigger wheels the original wheels and tyres frequently turn up on ebay. I've seen sets of 4 with little more than delivery mileage on them going for less than the cost of a new tyre.

I'm pretty sure 165/65 15 are used on the renault modus. so also turn up second hand for the same reason, although not so often.

I'm curious as to why you want wider tyres on the back, a sidewinder won't go round corners at the best of times. If you're going to chose one end to have a larger contact patch and more grip (although it doesn't always work that way) I'd definately be choosing the front.

I realise your cars a lot heavier at the front than mine but I have the same size tyre all round and if the front does start to break away when cornering a quick lift of the throttle will bring it back without the rear end coming round unpredictably. It's well balanced and controllable, and if I still had a sidewinder I'd certainly be thinking about trying them. A sidewinder probably has enough weight at the front to really take advantage of the extra rubber on the road.

Just cos they were going cheap really...

Bit of an updated, as jon said in an earlier reply... the gsa alloys with 145's will probably rub on the inner wings...They don't quite so really all i'm going to get away with without playing around is probably 155's or stick with some 145's from a smart!!

Matt, I'd be tempted to either stick with 145/80x15 or 135/80x15, I wouldn't drop a profile at all as you'll be lowering the gearing too.

Just my opinion. :geek:

Jon do you mean the 55, 65, 80 bit, between the 145 and R15..the Smart 145's I've got to go on the fronts are 145 65 R15 will that effect the gearing that much??

Assuming that you'd be swapping from 145/80r15 to the 145/65s, you would lower your gearing by 7.1% :geek:.

If it were me, I'd fit 1 pair of wheels with the smart tyres and 1 pair with the 145/80s, then swap them between the back and front and see what you prefer.
