With dim dip now disabled as per instructions is it safe to use halogen bulbs with no further mods?

I do, although I would recommend fitting relays under the bonnet.

But as I say, after 4 years of halogen bulbs, no problems yet.

There seem to be plenty of cars running around with 55/60 watt halogen bulbs fitted, so as long as the switch hasn't suffered too much from the time it had to cope with dim-dip...

Other folk have fitted relays to remove all but the switching current from the light switch, which is probably the ideal.

Since Dyane light switches are made of sterner stuff, it's not something I've ever needed to do. ;)

Having decided its finally time to do this I've stuck the car up in the air to find the sodding resistor is invisible. Any hints as to where it might be hiding?

In a bin somewhere, hopefully.

The resistor was originally clipped to the front of the chassis, between the bonnet catch and one leg of the light bar. If yours was a dim-dip car, there's probably a spare bit of loom dangling down one light-bar leg ending in a multiplug.

It had the relays which it needed connected in order for the lights to work, but no sign of any resistor or extra wires around there. I've bridged the relay terminals as instructed though and it all now seems to work nicely.

Back in the '80s, it was decided by "The Powers that Be" that all new cars must be fitted with Dim-Dip. The system works by illuminating the dip beam bulbs by 1/6th, when sidelights are turned on, so when the car is in use with sidelights on, the dip beam is working at a dimmer level to normal. The system was scrapped some years later, so more modern cars aren't fitted with it.
