Post Take off underseal?
Should I try to take the underseal off in order to waxoil it instead?

Not if the metal underneath is in good condition. But if there's rust spreading underneath, then it'll peel of quite easily and it'll be trapping water.

Underseal is horrible stuff. Once it starts to fail, water gets underneath and rots the metal away whilst still looking good. If you leave it until it starts to get damaged, you'll have metalwork to do as well. So, yep, it's not a bad plan.

OTOH, are you sure it's "proper" old-school underseal, not some more modern stuff like schutz?

Post Re: Take off underseal?
Hi Justin.

A tricky one. My take on this is pretty much as above - depedning on what kind of underseal it is, treat it with caution. Go over it VERY carefully looking for 'water blisters' and loose patches; use a wire brush and/or scraper and give any suspect parts a good look and going-over.

Many types of 'underseal' will harden over time and can be damaged fairly easily. Because it forms a tough 'skin', a tiny crack will draw water in by capillary action and it'll often form a water-blister on the metal underneath which will then settle there and start to do nasty stuff unseen.

Any parts that look at all 'insecure', I'd scrape it clean.

If, on the other hand, it generally looks to be secure, bonding well and in good order, then I reckon it would be ok to Waxoyl over it. Waxoyl is fab stuff, and should have the added benefit of 'rejuvenating' the original underseal, 'softening' it slightly and making it less likely to crack.

What you will very likely find is that the 'insides' of the chassis rails and hollow cross-tubes have not been treated, and this is where Waxoyl will be put to best use. If you use a 'Shutz'-type gun with an air compressor so that it gives a powerful spray, then you might get away with blasting thinned (at least 10% white spirits) Waxoyl down into each chassis rail via the open ends behind the bumpers. If you have any doubt as to whether the Waxoyl is getting right in the the middle section, then use a flexible probe instead.

Waxoyl-the-concept-and-generic-term is.
Waxoyl-the-actual-branded-product is not. There are far better products out there.

Many of the classic mags have done comparison tests and back-to-backs over the years - plus, of course, there's the "Find me a pro who uses Waxoyl" consideration...

Dinitrol and Bilt-Hamber are amongst the brands that AIUI are well regarded. Most brands do different products for cavities and underside, because the requirements are different.

Thanks for that all. I didn't realise I could "Waxoyl" (I was probably going to use Dinitrol) over the underseal. I am intending (when I finally get the car back) to fill up the box sections on the inside of the chassis and I was thinking is rather pointless if the underseal hid some nightmares. I think I will get underneath and check how good the stuff is.
