Kevin,
2CV box should be 5750 @ 72mph, which suggests 4312.50 (or thereabouts  ) for your 'big disc' box at the same speed.

Edit: ok Ken got there first but I think we're heading the same way.

My first answer would have been 'No', but hell I like a challenge.

Assuming your figures for the second box are correct, and that a 2CV box which converts 5770rpm into 72mph, gives 7.5 rotations of a single output shaft from 21 rotations of the input.
(ALTHOUGH using the figures from cats, a disc 2CV box should give 7.737 revolutions of a single output flange in response to 21 turns of the input shaft.)

The first box should give 5409rpm at 72mph.

And the third box should give 4328rpm at 72mph.

Am I right?

I have got three gear boxes on the floor for my convertion to Bmw power.. On the one with a scrol on the input shaft if I lock one disc and turn the input shaft 21 turns the other disc will turn 8 full turns in 4th..On one box if I do the same the free disc will turn 7.5 turns this is off a 2cv so is probably doing 72 mph at 5770 revs .. On the third box which is a 4 speed big discs 3 lots of 2 studs on the output shaft the free disc turns 10 full turns so can some one tell me what engine revs my beemer will be reving at 72 mph :geek:

same number of revs as any other engine would do with those boxes....
see this site: http://www.cats-citroen.net/home.html you can find a list of all known/availible boxes with revs in each gear coupled to the speed, also you have a calculator to find out what the optimal combination is for you! klick: 2CV; tuning; A-type tuningcalculations. fill in all parts you have and you will know what you have or what you need to change!

A 2cv would be flat out at 72 ish were as now I know the bmw would be 4500 revs ish which on an engine that revs to 7000 may be ideal... next question on an blackjack avion 2cv powered trike Mr oaks makes an adapter to fit an SU carb but from memory the inlet pipes up to it are not Siamesed infact one is a right angle is this that grossly detrimental as I would like to fit just one original carb and am planning the position of it.

If I understand the question, inlet manifolds don't seem to use siamesed pipes in the same way that exhausts do, but I'd try and avoid any excessively sharp corners. Is this the BM motor? Why are you not sticking with the twin carbs?

Sod that. Injection. If it's not one that was injected originally, then megasquirt.

Is fitting Megasquirt easy Adrian, or is it easier just to leave it on a shelf? :P

Thanks, but nothing there that I hadn't already thought of. When I asked how much longer the 5sp is, I meant the housing on the back. I could lift the back of the box over the axle, but I've heard several people say it causes oil starvation problems, although it may not be such a big problem for me as my engine sits quite high already, because of the deep sump.
And sorry to disappoint Russ, but if I did move the axle back it would only be by a couple of centimeters so the tie-rods and shocks would be fine and the wheel position would be compensated by the turned arms moving them forward.

Hi Joolz great looking car, and a fantastically engineered solution by the looks of it. Sounds great from the youtube clip too. As I read your posts back on page 7 of this thread I thought to myself; isn't he lucky the BMW engine runs the same (ie. "clockwise") way as a 2cv

Just a thought (which I had driving back from work today  ) on your quest for space for the 5 speed box. Had you considered raising both the gearbox (over the axle) and the front of the engine together to avoid any oil starvation from funny angles, depends if you have any space at the front / bonnet area of course, its hard to tell from the picutres. If you're going lower than standard on the suspension anyway the driveshafts should be able to cope with the angle I would think.

Other thought, how about recessing the front axle partially into the chassis, so that a channel is cut out of the chassis and massively reinforced before sitting the axle in its ditch which would make it lower and therefore have more space for the 5 speed box. A massive piece of work to achieve of course, but I think I've seen it done somewhere, maybe on snail with someone putting a subaru legacy engine on an A series chassis or something similarly insane.

Good luck with the ongoing work, but for now just drive and enjoy it. Have you burned off many boy racers from the lights? :D

Chris
