Simon, I'd have thought that welding steering arms to hubs became redundant after 'cutting and turning' to restore the castor angle was permitted. That was quite a while back, so there's really no link with Belgian arms. Btw, make sure that you use a 10/9 grade bolt as a replacement for the one which sheared off. Might be worth checking t'others as well, since grass cutting or gravel gathering can both put heavy side loads on the steering gear. ken

Thanks Ken, the more I look at it, I think that the bolt may have sheered before, and the 'easy repair' option was to weld the arm I was thinking about using socket head bolts as replacements, I'm not sure if I can get them in 10/9 though.

If you can get M7 socket head bolts they will probably be high tensile anyway, but I think you'll have difficulty finding M7 with a socket head. If you think it's a weak point have you thought about tapping them out to M8, that would give let you chose from every type of bolt under the sun. Just check that enlarging the hole in the arm won't weaken it too much. I wouldn't recommend using stainless for high stress stuff, but this may interest people. It looks like these guys do a good range of stainless M7 with hex and socket head. http://www.polished-stainless.com/
