Alternatives, I think that's the crux of it. When you start talking eleven grand the alternatives that such money affords are much greater than previously. And in direct comparison the 2cv then looks to be poor value for money in terms of what you actually get against something more mainstream.

The scenario you described sounds pretty much like the retail equivalent of going fishing, dangle your price in the 'water' and see who bites. I suppose 'there's always one' (except when I'm selling  ) and although the rise in prices is perhaps to the benefit of us all I'm not keen on such high prices being touted. Like houses, the price of your 2cv is academic, unless of course you intend to sell up. Householders move abroad where a bigger and better house can be had for the same money, whereas car owners might quite like a Mk9 Jag for the 'price of a 2cv'.

Isn't it always, when you're selling something "unique"?

I'm not sure that 'uniqueness' is the selling point, I think that some folk are either attempting to create a self fulfilling prophesy price wise like the markets do, or perhaps the 2cv is joining the ranks of the other so called 'microcars', I mean ...have you seen the current price of an Isetta!

Being an absolute cad, I'm afraid that should anyone offer me lots of lolly for my 2cv then I shall jolly well take it.

Strange, the 400 (sans CG) looks more roadworthy (in the British sense) than the 250 (avec CG).
