Post French documents.....Carte Gris etc. what is needed?
Hey All,
Looking around at the various sites with french Deuches for sale I would like some more info on what documents are needed for legal importation into the UK.....?

Is the Carte Gris like a registration log book? do you have to have it to register a vehicle in the UK?

I await your learned responses....

Best regards,
Shane

P.S>If you know of any other major pitfalls of buying in france let me know.....

Hi Shane,

A carte grise is desirable, but not essential - you're right in thinking it's the log book. If you don't have a carte grise, the best solution was at one time to supply Citroen UK with a chassis number & that would get you a response on headed paper with the build date of the vehicle & that would normally satisfy your local registration office. Although these days it's perhaps easier to draw blood from a stone - i first contacted Cit UK in early January & have phoned, faxed, emailed them several times since & still nothing.

If you're not already a member, then i recommend you join 2CVGB - you should be able to obtain a dating letter on club headed paper that will do the trick.

Thanks Lads,
I have imported cars from the states before and I am happy enough with the procedural side of things, but I hadn't come across the Carte Gris before.....

On a side note, what is the story with the CT (MOT) that they have en France, I get the impression that it isn't as rigorous as the MOT.....????? Is that so?

Thanks again,
Shane.

That's a bit of a myth. It is true to say that they have a more lenient view on the less critical items, but a dangerous car will not pass a test here either. The thing that is most obvious on a 2CV is that rusty front floors wont fail a test. As long as there is something to stop your feet dangling on the road surface, its OK.

Split wiper blades and screen washer that don't work wont get you a fail but will just be an advisory. The test here lasts for two years too.

You can't assume a car with a fresh CT will pass an MOT.

It certainly wouldn't though it could still be a good car.
