It runs but smokes like a chimney. That said, I think I could just detect the first sounds of the "death rattle" just before I switched it off! :(

I'm gonna rip the front off it again tomorrow afternoon and see if there's anything obvious like one of the new stem seals let go or similar.

Hey ho, nothing ventured, nothing gained eh?

how long did you run it for? takes a while to get rid of the oil from the build

also did you hone the barrels use new rings was there a wear ridge on the barrel did you use new stem oil seals did you use the ones out of the gasket set

was it a known crank did it rattle before

So many questions!

I ran it for quite a while and did 10 miles before coming home and realising it was smoking like the proverbial.

They're new rings in very nice machined barrels (courtesy of DC so you probably know more about them than me! ;) ) and new stem seals-not out of the gasket set but look identical....................

As for the "death rattle", it was definately top end rather than bottom so not the end of the world I guess although, strangely enough, I'd be happier if it had all worked properly!

Gonna rip it all apart again this afternoon, see if I can find my problem and hoping I've not damaged any of the new bits I've bought............ :?

Still, on the bright side, at least I know everything will come undone easilly enough.

Right, I've checked everything and then checked it again and now refitted my new valves back into the original heads and placed an(other) order with that there 2CV parts supplier in Staffordshire.

So hopefully, when I'm home alone on Friday, I can get stuck in and have a running and smoke free 2CV again.......................

What did you think was wrong with it?

I've not drawn any conclusions yet but I have managed to damage one of the push rod tubes fairly catastrophically and have doubts about the new valve stem seals I fitted. :(

I don't think there's anything out there that beats swapping valves around from cylinder head to cylinder head, all that lapping in is way too much fun for me!

I've fitted my nice shiny new valves back into the original head, I've also fitted the rocker gear with equally nice shiny new socket head bolts and refitted the heads to the crankcase. Carefully!

With everything torqued up correctly, I reconnected everything and crossed my fingers. I cranked it over a dozen or so times first with the coil disconnected to build up oil pressure and then, with coil reconnected, she started instantly and settled straight down to a nice slightly lumpy tickover.

Left her running for just over an hour in the garage while I got on with other jobs (beer) with occasional "blip" of the throttle and there's not even the slightest hint of oily smoke :D

I don't know what was up with it before but, as I've got a few spare engines knocking about, I'm going to try to straighten up the one pushrod tube on the other heads and fit another new set of stem seals and standard valves and try them on another engine just to see if I can get to the bottom of the oiliness!

Oh, I've just remembered, I'm not gonna be doing an awful lot to my cars for a little while as Rachaels' bloody C5 decided to spontaneously combust last night. Again! Sadly, once again, it extinguished itself just before the fire brigade arrived so we're still kinda stuck with that and I've got to fix it!

I bolted all the front end back on her today and made sure lights etc work ready to take her out for a spin. But then decided to take Seth instead-the sun was shining and I didn't fancy cooking in a tin top!

MOT expires tomorrow so gonna fit a shorter steering column and a few other bits over the next few weeks, she's booked in for MOT on May 1st so gives me a bit more "tinker" time. 8-)

Put my new sticker on too. Cheers Simon. 8-)

I've not done any of the jobs I'd planned but, I did get round to changing the gearoil. After last years gearbox fun and games, I'd like to try and keep this gearbox in working order for as long as possible.

MOT in the morning.
