So, does it spin over on the starter or, better yet, the starting handle?

Started to spin on the starter motor, But then kind of died in the same way it would a flat battery.

What bodge did you do to the filter?

and more to the point about it spinning
does it have compression?

And all just goes to show the best most reliable long distance euro raider would be just as the eingineers designed it to be as it rolled off the ramp at Quai Javel ;)

Quai de Javel factory built the Traction Avant, H-van and DS/ID models. The 2cv was built at Levallois ;)

Max,
if the dipstick is being pushed out, usually there's only one reason, unfortunately.
There's been a partial seizure of the engine, so either the rings are stuck in their grooves or are broken...

Not only will compression be very low, but the huge amount of blowby pressurises the crankcase, so pop goes the dipstick.

New pistons and barrels needed, as well as setting the timing up so there's no trace of pinking?

ken

Gonna go with your thoughts Ken. My Dad said the same about the partial seizure. Harrys up this weekend so were going to giver her new pistons and barrels. He's going to bring a spare engine just incase. (we might just put in that to be honest) :)

Max.
