What, not legal in France?

No, you can't modify engines even upgrading 435 to 602 without approval from Citroen. If you take the car to DRIRE for inspection they will ask for approval from Citroen France. Citroen do not believe that modification is needed so you don't get their approval.

But that doesn't stop anybody, right? I mean, I've seen plenty of flat4 2cvs on French plates?

The problem is at CT time and if you get an examiner that knows what he is looking at. Lets face it on opening a bonnet there isn't a great deal to spot between a 435, 602 or even a 652 to an untrained eye.

I suppose the other issue is insurance in the event of a crash.

I have certainly fitted a 602 unit into a 2CV4 and it went through its test without a problem, but Viking is right to the letter of the rules.

would be nice, how long would it last tho? how much horse power would that give they're a bit vauge, running low octane fuel - a little less than the 652's at 32 to 48 HP so that can't be good.
I use super unleaded in my 602 9:1 engine (is that good? it does work) and find BP ultimate best i can feel the difference from normal fuel and tesco super the worst - engine doesn't tick over or pick up revs very well

A bit

and slightly less than 32bhp puts it firmly in the 602 range (M28-35bhp)
but to be fair he did develop an engine to run on really low octane at high altitude for the Peking Paris rally-over the Himilaya

your 9;1 will be fine on unleaded especially if you feed it the expensive stuff but do be carefull with the timing as it will have a tendancy to pink if its on the advanced side
