nail
glued the trim in!

it was originally held with self tapers!!

those seat covers are the best of the modern Cit ones and will happily go through the washing machine

but the older ones that dont have the sides would be more appropriate to your look

get Mrs Nail involved with the sewing machine

These are nice:

Not "authentic", but they do add a certain something...

Sean the hinge covers have been secured with self tappers. It was the interior trim on the sides of the body I was referring to there, the grey felty stuff. I put it in and it stayed in without glue so I left it, but then decided to glue it anyway to do it right.

I've been thinking about those older style seat covers, if they were a straight swap I'd go for them because one of the seat covers I have is a bit rotten, and all are torn where the hog rings were. There doesn't seem to be anyone that has experience of whether or not they go straight in over the later style seats?

According to SamFieldhouse in a recent thread viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1383&p=27267#p27267

Quote:
"I can confirm they're not covers - it's a complete rehupolstery kit comprising of 2 front seats, rear bench seat and new door covers. You have to removed whatever upholstery you have in place.

What you will need to buy is the seat rubbers and canvas gussets if the wire's rusty or the canvas is torn."

My guess is that they'd be made for the later seat styles. Best to email Harrington and get it straight from the horse's mouth, though.

Yes I've looked at them, in fact the Mrs was peering over my shoulder when I did so and said "don't get any ideas" whatever that means. :?

ON - did you use any special paint to paint your steering wheel? The single spoke brown one for my car is too far gone, but I've got a decent two spoke and single spoke in black.

Cheers, Ben

Ben it depends what type of wheel you have. I seem to recall that on one of my 2cv's the wheel had a kind of soft 'squashy' feel to it, maybe it was the monobranche club I once had? Obviously that type wouldn't take paint without it cracking again with the slight movement.

Anyway for this 'hard' plastic type wheel I rubbed it down with fine 360 paper first, degreased and etch primed it with Upol-acid etch, then put plastic primer over that for good measure. Several thin coats of white spray enamel then followed. I think the paint was originally intended for wheels (the other kind :D ) actually, and is called 'felgenspray'. Hammerite smooth is similar to this I think, but that's really watery stuff out of a can and so it isn't easy to get an even covering.

I left the steering wheel in a warm room for a few days between each coat to let it cure, then roughed up the surface again with a scotchbrite pad before re-coating. Finally, when it looked well covered and even I placed it between a towel in the airing cupboard and left it. I did that for two reasons;

1 It was out of the way there and wouldn't get banged or chipped.

2 The nice warm environment made sure the enamel paint hardened off fully.

Obviously I was in no hurry for to refit the wheel so I was able to take my time, but I don't see why it couldn't be done quicker using the same technique.

Thanks for the comprehensive write-up! I'll see if I can find something similar.

Among the many small things I've done since I last posted, (which I'll not bore you with here) I am pleased to report that following a request in this forums 'wanted' section my car is now sporting a set of paperclip bumper fitments! That'll go a long way to help me get the 60's look that I'm after, so a big thank you to forum member Ben for answering my wanted ad. 8-)
