Oh, and thanks for the offer, Spanners, and the advice (rest of you). Sorry to disappoint those of you who were expecting something a little more, err, full throttle, but I figured I had to draw you in somehow!

Snowy,
probably best to remove the front wings, to make life easier.
As already advised, support the rear end of the gearbox so that there's no pressure on the two M7 bolts ( 11mm hex heads) as you unscrew them to release the gearbox mounting from the 'stalk' on the front axle.
It would be handy to have a selection of wooden chocks to wedge between the underside of the gearbox and the handbrake cross member to support the gearbox.
Alternatively, if the crossbox has both mounting bolts in place, you can put a small trolley jack under the exhaust cross box to support the gearbox.

Righto. So there's no need to get all the engine and gearbox out. Just support the engine, undo the bolts and let gravity and a bit of gruntwork do the rest?

Sounds fairly straightforward. Thanks Ken, tips like having wooden chocks etc to hand are very useful. I did the clutch last month, so I'm up for anything at the moment.

When removing a front wing, get a two litre plastic drinks bottle(cola) and cut the base off it, you can then use that, to slot over the end of the bumper and save scratching the paint. No doubt, you'll get others say they just use old rags/towels etc, but I've always used a bottle.
