Post Re: Large diameter springs
thanks ken. I tripped over a mismatched pair of larger cans in the lock up earlier, once I get a chance I'll have a go at them and see what I find. I've got until may, but the huge variety of different springs you're finding makes me wonder if what I'm doing is worth the effort! Although having had a try of the camper conversion this evening it would be better to have it stiffer, the slightest movement in the car makes it wobble about like a blancmange, people might wonder what I'm upto in there....

don't give up yet... ;)
I've still got another 4 or 5 cans to open up, so might have a clearer idea of which ones would yield some stronger rear springs after that surgery's done.

There was an Ami Super chassis complete with cans that popped up on Ebay about a month ago, but that was pulled as soon as I started watching it.
Curious, or should that be 'Classic'?

( I'm not too sure that relying on stronger dampers to stiffen the ride is the best plan. Won't the rubber bushes take a bit of a pounding, for starters? )

So, to cut a long story short, I'm wasting
my time going about asking for springs from anything specific? I might just buy harder shocks and go with it as it is.

get some logs cut to the correct height and put them under the chassis.

Russell,
opened another can today and have now found 2 rear springs which aren't just the same, but are also 2nd in the strength rankings so far.
They're 240mm long, 18.65 wire diameter and 8.5 turns.

Anyone know the ins and outs of IDing an Ami, as the tech waffle from Citroen suggests this pair are from an AMF3 or AMC3, 1976 onwards?

Mind you, finding one more 225mm, with 18.65 wire and 7.5 turns would give a matching pair with minimal boinginess...

No, people will know exactly what your up to!

tried car camping one night after missing ferry after Italy WM unfortunatley the springs brayed like a donkey every time i moved, got a little irritating for the neighbours

Here's an idea right off the top of my head, If I extended the knife edge mounting in the arms of the Ami, (so the hole for the knife adge is further from the centre of rotation of the arm) will that increase the amount of load required to compress the spring?

I don't think so, if I've not got confused about how it all works (quite likely, I am incredibly stupid) then I'd have thought it'd make it sit higher if anything?

Part of me wants to know more about what different parts were fitted to what cars when, and part of me doesn't want to even think about going down that road....

Russell,
yes, moving the knife edge location further away from the axle centreline does work and is exactly what was done on certain early glassfibre van conversions, so that they had a reasonable load carrying capacity.

This seems to have overlooked on those versions which followed later...

However, for this to work without problems of misalignment of the tie rods where they pass through the canister end fittings, the chassis also has to be altered, with that only feasible when the chassis is being laid up.
