i bought mine cos i wanted economical, different, charater and general awesomeness. Paid £398.80 now insured for £5k, similar cars sell for £3kish so i'm not complaiing.

I don't intend to seel my car. I loves her muchly.

It is nice to own a car thats appreciating though, and I think thats something you have to understand when buying a 2cv (if you keep it nice).

I remeber the previous 2cv Disk Break register saying to me he dreaded being asked to do an insurance letter on one of the 2cv city show cars. at £10k plus theyre.just.not.worth.it.

I love the precision. Did you really give the guy £400, then receive £11.20 change?

Is that on an agreed value policy? If not, then you'll still be offered their interpretation of a risible "market value". Even if it is, presumably with a self-certified value, it's worth looking carefully at the policy wording.

Very much like you sam, I bought my current 2cv in April 2002, for £460 on a galv. chassis. The sills had been done and the drivers side floor, but it generally looked rough(bonnet off a blue/cream D*lly, rusty doors, badly hand painted boot-lid with a boot rack bolted to it and rusty wings). I've had the shell off and the passenger floor replaced with the inner/outer bulkhead(thanks go to Spanners, who generally fettles it)and two years ago I spent over £3000 on having the windscreen surround, A-panels, A-posts, C-posts, rear sweeps(Custodes, as they're known in France), rear lamp panel, boot floor cut out and replaced, along with a new section above the passenger side B-post(where you have the seam, on the roof, the seam was rotten). At the same time, I had a new windscreen and rubber, new wiper spindles and new lining on the inner roof/inner of inner rear wings. To finish off, I had four new "original"wings fitted and of course, it was resprayed. Current value with FJ £6000. Agreed.
I still use it most days and in fact, I've done a greater number of miles in it, this last year, than in my Skoda Fabia!! :o :D

Oh, forgot to mention...I found a scrap 2cv and bought four near mint doors, for £40 :D

Me too. I invested a few quid, and came up trumps straight away with a brilliant bunch of new friends, drinking buddies, new social life, renewed sense of joy de vivre and above all, a smile on my face every time I drive it.

I couldn't give a sh*t what my own, or anyone else's 2CV is worth. It's just a lump of metal and rubber. All the stuff that comes with it, the stuff listed above, is priceless.

When I bought my first 2CV in 79 new, I hadnt realised I was joining an elite class of drivers that unfortunately was mainly left wing beardy teachers, and that was just the women! About 90% seemed to be based in London and 2CVGB meetings were something to behold - full of people saying how they change the sprocket on a gismo with .006mm of play etc, etc, yawn.
2CV's and other A class varieties have always been about cheap means of transport, but have from time to time been hijacked by the fashionista and as a result for a time interest from pseudo fans increases, along with prices.
When I bought Dudley, we paid £400 for a nail and I have easily spent over £3000, both with DIY work and also with Richard Dalton, and I would never consider him to be either a classic or worth £4000 on agreed Insurance. Its a joke, its an old car, that needs loads of TLC and regular injections of cash but Steve would kill me if I suggested selling it or cashing it in on scrappage, which is about all its worth at most.
2CV's should be driven hard, repaired when needed and, if its your bag, kept as an ornament but dont ever forget, its just a bit of metal that will one day, unfortunately, return to the Iron Oxide it started from!
