Hi all

How tricky is it to fit a new hood? I am a bit worried regarding the back window. I was going to get one from these people as they say their hoods are good quality:

It is a shame as the one I've got is not so bad, it just isn't finished. Elastic/rubbers not sealed in and cross members not attached. Oh and there is a 1 inch hole above the back window. Seems better just to get a new one.

Fitting hoods is a relatively straight-forward process as I recall.

The hoods you link to seem fine, though ECAS http://www.ecas2cvparts.co.uk/-c-111_210.html always have hoods in stock.

and given the price of new ones, think I will be for a while yet. Nice hoods, though the canvas is bit flappy when driving with it half open. Last well too - think mine is nearly 10 years old and in good nick.

To remove an old roof:

Remove the bootlid, unscrew the two self tappers at the top of the rear window, undo the two 8mm head bolts which are by the brackets for the parcel shelf, undo the front of the roof, take it off, take the two aluminium end pieces for the boot hinge off (note: it will be almost impossible to undo the screws, so maybe buy new ones if you have to be destructive) remove boot hinge, remove the strap thing from the front, drive around until you find somebody who's got a skip outside their house, and when nobody is looking throw the roof in the skip.

To fit a new one:

Refit that strap thing, refit the bootlid hinge and the two ally bits, place on the car, put the two bolts holding the parcel shelf brackets in, clip the roof down at the front refit the bootlid but DON'T fit the self tappers above the window for a couple of weeks until the roof has settled in shape a bit.

Pour a cold beer, spark up a smoke, stand back and admire your handywork.

I bought mine from ecas in 2006 and its now started to go. The glue has discoloured the roof and the elastic has started to come out. Its also started to crack and split around the edges.

I'm not dissatisfied, its been on there almost 4 years and is still perfectly servicable, it's just not really up to standard anymore, which is a shame. Its probably got another year of life left before it needs replacing.

I'd love a Matts roof, but they don't do the right colour

I changed the roof on my '88 spesh at the last registers day we had at Ferry Meadows [would that be 2006?] .....I fitted a genuine Citroen roof [sourced from "Uncle Roys Emporium"] .....fortunately "Roys Emporium" was still open when I realised that I needed two new aluminium corner bits [otherwise I'd have been having to send away for them after starting the job and realising that I needed them].
I also fitted the two [above mentioned] self tapping screws at the same time .....everything lined up OK ....I guess I was lucky.
btw .... the roof still looks as good as new.

I did'nt realise it was that long ago ......although I must admit that after I'd made the post I thought to myself ......"Nahh,it must have been '05" ....amazing how time passes ...

I think I got my Matts roof at a ferry meadows registers day. The only down side is the flapping when the roof's half open. The heavier vinyl doesn't seem to suffer with the flapping. Having said that, it's better going all the way with the roof off anyway.
