Post Re: The O/T thread!
Well it looks like the time has come to sell my beloved Mercedes. I'm pretty gutted as I love the car, but having used the Ami for a week or two, it's made me realise how much cash I'm spending on fuel, which I don't mind but I could really use the money to save up for France in May. I can't really see me using a 2cv everyday again, and whilst I personally think that a car isn't a car unless it's over 2000cc, RWD, auto and 4 door, I'm going to have to buy something smaller for the time being. I really fancy an XJS but I don't think that's going to be any better economy wise than the Merc, so I've had to draw up a shortlist of cars that are going to be a bit cheaper.

First on the list, would be:

A Trabant 601, I'm a bit worried that it won't be capable of the sort of mileage I do a week and that when I break it, which I probably will, getting parts won't be an overnight affair. I have wanted one for ages, and I reckon this might be the time to get one, as they seem to be getting quite pricey nowadays.

Secondly,:

A Skoda 105/120/125/Estelle, which has the bonus of having its driven wheels the right end and being so cheap that it'll cost more to fly out and pick one up than it will actually buy it. That's the tricky part though, there just aren't any of these in the UK that haven't fallen into the hands of classic car types who think that because it's not something you see everyday, and it's old(ish) then it's worth money. The flipside of this is that in Czech you can buy a minter for about €100... It just means a trip to Czech and all the hassle of MoTing/registering it when I get it back home.

Then, there's one of these:

I had one a few years ago for a week, and it was great. It's a pity it's FWD but it'd do me for the time being until something else came along...

Hadn't thought about one of those! I'll add it to the list of possible purchases!

By the way, does anybody recognise where the picture of the trabi was taken?
