I take it the grub screws keep the bush in place, and the bush is threaded? Close. The bush is hollow allowing the tool to enter catching the hex bolt. When the hex bolt is unscrewing, it hits the backside of the bush and pops it off, voila no more hammering.

 Re: Starting Problems :(
right, i found out that the handle/lever for our jack fits into the end of the pulley perfectly.. well with a couple of light hammer taps... after much tapping and rotating, i spent quite a while on this (didnt have all day though) katie was sat there on the floor in the unit wrapped up in her duvet falling asleep watching and it wouldnt budge... only other approach i can think of would be tapping it from round the back with a prybar and hammer... worked before... but was alot easier on an engine that wasnt in a car... obviously i know my car and what im safe to start taking apart... but with mylo... i'd rather not start unbolting bits and bobs... very nice tool btw viking! (something you should patent and mass produce )

I have stock for people not able to produce themself. The bush is cheap compared to a hub out of control cutting the oil cooler in two

 Re: Starting Problems :(
This may be the most useless suggestion ever, but have you tried invoking the penetrating oil gods? (plusgas).
A good spray every hour or two for a few days can work wonders on stuck things if one isn't in a hurry to do a job.
In-fact it works very well with not that long to penetrate too, but only when thing aren't quite 'that' stuck.
If that doesn't work its either time for one of vikings beautiful pulling devices or heat so far as I can see. Heat however probably being a bad idea if one wants to avoid cooking the front crankshaft seal.
Were it my car though I would be tempted to try and get some tinfoil behind the fan, and gently warming the centre with a heat gun rather than a blow lamp. Only if a whole tin of plusgas had failed to make to movable by gentle tapping though.

 Re: Starting Problems :(
thanks, I've never heard of plusgas before, the only problem is katie lives a good 45 minutes from me, and we dont speak every single day, going back and forth to bedford would become quite expensive, she's told me her father knows a mechanic, so maybe she's in luck, possibly good hands? i've told her to ignore any words like/related to Scrap or Sell! mylo may be driving katie mad, but she does have sentimental value and i think it would be a shame for her to just give up on him and sell him or worse, scrap!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PLUSGAS-DISMANTLI ... _500wt_867A quick look finds that to be the cheapest source of it, though it may be cheaper elsewhere. Unless its a tight as a ducks backside it probably shouldn't take forever and lots of applications.

 Re: Starting Problems :(
Having done some more googling I found this...
April 2007 "Machinist's Workshop" magazine comparison test.* ** *They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.* **
*Penetrating oil ..... Average load*
None ..................... 516 pounds WD-40 .................. 238 pounds PB Blaster ............. 214 pounds Liquid Wrench ..... 127 pounds Kano Kroil ............ 106 pounds ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds
*The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50% acetone - 50% automatic transmission fluid.*
Some further googling and it looks like it would cost twenty quid to make up a ten litre stash of the mix, at a 50:50 ratio, or approximately a tenth of the price of plusgas.
Though I appreciate this may not be of direct relevance to getting your fan off, it seemed like something people may find useful on here, and I wasn't too sure where to put it.

 Re: Starting Problems :(
' a few light taps ' is where your'e going wrong imo. you need to give it a good hit either side of the bar and the bar needs to be a solid bar not a hollow jack bar.

 Re: Starting Problems :(
Joe, you mention using the starting handle/wheelbrace above i think ( i was sorta scan reading) dont do that please. the brace isnt strong enough and bends and the dof in the fan hub can get bent also so that when you might need to use the starting handle it doesnt engage properly. You need something that fits well into the hub hole (we all like things that fit well in holes dont we) That way the shock you give with the hammer blow to your impliment is transferred better and not dispersed. If you and katie or the car is coming past this way at all (nr kettering) then give me a shout and i will help get it off Failing that, i will be in northampton on monday the 28th. if Katie and car should be about and you want to liase then it will be good too.
