 bakelite
Hi! My steering wheel is made of bakelite (1963 model) and alcohol cleaning has been damaging it. It gets sticky and some white stains appear. Do you know any sanitary product that doesn't damage the wheel but effectively cleans it? Thanks!

 Re: bakelite
Probably just use a detergent, like washing up liquid, or a hand wash.

 Re: bakelite
Metal polish. Brasso is the least abrasive so try that on a small section first. Chrome polish is stronger if you need.

 Re: bakelite
Absolutely avoid detergents. Detergents are very damaging to any product where there is petroleum oil used in the manufacturing process.
Detergents cause oils to emulsify, breaking them down. Cleaning plastics with washing up liquid can cause colour change and breakdown.
Bakelite reacts badly to continually damp conditions.
Drying the wheel out will help - can you leave it somewhere warm and dry for a few weeks?
Then polish gently with brasso.
