 Wheel Bearing Replacement
Hi all. I started hearing the rear wheel bearings rumbling in recent times. I imagine it's an easy job - any tips please?
Also, perhaps more importantly is what brand have people found OK? Parts for cars these days are so bad l, I would like to get good quality.
I may do the fronts too whilst I'm there, the car has about 120k miles and has been a great workhorse at times, its carried plenty of heavy loads.

 Re: Wheel Bearing Replacement
In the first instance, I would take a look at it! It could just need tightening up. As tyres wear, they can sound like a bearing. I've had tyres that have bulged and that can cause a drumming sound. Of course ... It could be the bearing!

 Re: Wheel Bearing Replacement
Club Cassis has a video showing thr removal of the rear drum in the process of replacing the brake shoes, but the bit that may help is from 2mins - 3:30mins. The 44mm hub nut will be tight. The fitter slackens off the brake shoe adjuster cams (remarkably easily!) to allow the shoes to withdraw away from the drum facilitating drum removal. I've always used a pair of screwdrivers to ease it off, never needing to resort to any kind of extractor. https://www.technique-mehariclub.com/tu ... cv-mehari/Once the drum is off, you will need to remove the bearing locking nut which is a ring nut locked in with peenings around the circumference. These need to be drilled out (not too deep!). A special tool is available, or you can make one that fits into the cut outs of the ring nut to remove, or you could attack it with a drift and hammer. Damage will occur. It is then a case of knocking out the old bearing and in with the new. The new bearing must be drifted or pressed in square, and only drift against the outer edge never the central portion. The fronts are different proceedure, but in some ways easier. Re: Wheel Bearing Replacement
Excellent, thank you both. So no particular problems with bearings from Ecas or wherever? I only say that because so many car parts seem to be made out of cheese these days.

 Re: Wheel Bearing Replacement
That's a problem with just buying parts these days, they could be knock offs

 Re: Wheel Bearing Replacement
Wheel bearings are one of the few jobs I still pay somebody to do... just in case it goes wrong/needs more time that is worth my while.
