Hi all , just recommissioning my 83 club and after being laid up for about 6 years the front brake calipers were sticking on so i purchased some used calipers and bled the system with new rubbers for the master cylinder reservoir. The other day after driving a bit the pedal did bugger all! After a few pumps I had brakes again. I got home and touched the calipers which were BOILING!, upon cooling down I seem to have pressure again..

A few things

I think the brakes may be ever so slightly binding on the front
There is no cooling shrouds fitted
I did not realise I had to centralise the calipers (from another car) to mine using shins or filing some off the gearbox side (would this really effect things?)
Do I need a new master cylinder?

The rears seem to let go ok

Could be dirt in the calipers that makes them sticky. I don't think the master cylinder is the problem.

Possibly the brakes are not riding back off the disks as AZL57 suggests

Is the handbrake binding?

If you are saying the secondhand calipers have just been fitted (recommissioned after six years), did you fit new seals to the secondhand calipers, or use 'as is'? If the latter, they need overhauling with new seals as it sounds like the pistons are sticking allowing the pads to bind against the discs thereby generating heat sufficient to boil the fluid - hence no brakes.

Just had a quick look before work (greasy AGAIN) yes the nsf is binding I bought the calipers as “reconditioned” from classic 2cv recycling not impressed! Thanks for your help on here I hate mucking about with brakes on the 2cv grr

I've had three purchases from that seller and every one had some issues with the part supplied, I won't be buying from there again.

Thanks again, interesting! I ordered some new ones from ecas as I can’t be assed to be mucking about my back won’t take it! Anyway ecas rang me today which was nice at least to say they forgot my order and I won’t receive them until Monday now. I rang martyn and he swears that the man he uses bench tested them so I stripped them down again and managed to bolt the caliper together together and use the cars hydraulic system to get the pistons out, to be fair they came out ok ish, I squirted some gt85 on the pistons when I pressed them back in and worked them in and out a few times (AWKWARD!) re fitted the caliper and re bled again, went for a drive not binding but the caliper still gets warm to touch, warmer then the offside, still need to source some cooling shrouds and install apparently it’s a bitch of a job, are the calipers meant to get warm? I done about 4-5 miles and used the brakes and they se m to be letting go ok. Just the calipers getting warm I’m a bit concerned about, maybe with ise they will free up..

Did you put the thin distance plates between brake claws and gearbox?

Yes I did, both sides have them
