Back again Plugs have been changed. Valve clearances have been attempted. These are not so easy to do on the Bedouin. However, I will do them again until I get a them right. Regarding ignition timing. If I'm going to bend the stops in, I may just as well try to get the timing right at idle. So, setting the timing dynamically, what should I be aiming for at idle and full advance? Are the values in Haynes accurate?

Thanks for that Ken. I can set the timing but didn't have the parameters. It's why I asked about Haynes values. Haynes states 8* static, but also 12* dynamic. But I'm not sure how much for to trust this as no one else has mentioned it. Anyway ..... Reset tappets (8 & 10 thou). But it now sounds like baked bean tins in a bucket. Timing reset to something like the static point for idle and full advance just over. This was on the forth attempt. Had to bend the stops along way in! Also turned the mixture up a little as turned it down for resent MOT. Overall, somewhat better, but noisey. Still have LPG mixer in place though. Thanks everyone. Any thoughtson noise?

According to my information the clearance of the tappets should be 0,15-0,20 mm with the engine cold.( How to restore Citoën 2cv and 2Cv handboek ) So I guess the tappets are too tight and that is what the noise is. I would not drive it this way, it might damage your tappets

Thanks Gert Tappets are a bit loose. I have imperial feeler gauges. These measure in thousands (thou) of an inch. A millimetre is a little over 39 thou, so I rounded that up to 40 thou. Ken advised 0.2 and 0.25. This equals 8 and 10 thou. Haynes also confirm your 0.15 and 0.20 mm and also states 6 and 8 thou. There are those that say a 'tappety tappet, is a happy tappet'.  and set to 0.2 and 0.25 I set mine to the larger gap because I wanted to eliminate a tight clearance possibly causing the misfire. I also have difficulty in setting them accurately because on the Bedouin the wing doesn't come off so easily and I have things bolted to the inside. I can take the rocker cover off from inside the wheel arch and adjust, but need to hold the feeler gauge in the engine compartment. Having said all that ...... I think it was mostly the timing. Though you have reminded me to check the compression when hot. Cheers all

Thanks Geert That is something I had forgotten. I did a compression test this morning with a warm engine. Looked to both be about 165 within a couple of psi, so that is useful to know. I think I may invest in some good HT leads. Mine are a little longer than standard as the coil is mounted on the gearbox, so I will need to find some. I called in the local Halfords yesterday, to be told HT leads are order only!

This is true. However, I need longer leads as the coil is on the gearbox. So many suppliers want the registration number of the vehicle these days before they can find THE part. I require 2 leads @ 660mm with a 90 degree male on the coil end and a 45 degree on the plug end does not appear to compute. Always open to suggestions.
