Gnope, no fouling at all. It all looks good. So I suppose it can only be the other driveshaft or the wheel bearings. Never heard a bearing make a noise like this though.

Ian,
if you're getting feedback through the steering wheel when on full lock and under power, that's an indication of a C.V. joint on the way out, with the outer joint the most likely candidate.

From your first post... "Definitely the drive shaft in the right side, if you turn left enough it'll aggravate it and it might keep clonking even on the straight for a bit."

However, when turning left, the driveshaft on the left/nearside has to cope with more deflection than that on the right/offside, so perhaps you've replaced the wrong one? :(

Ken, I think you might be right.. I'm going to go with getting another driveshaft. Both were very worn anyway so it needed doing.

As for the turning left, I turned right to get into my drive and it wasn't having it. The horrible noise was too bad so I had to do it in stages. So turning on either direction seems to do it.

I've had 2cv noise before but that's always been clicking. This is a scraping clunking noise.

Hope that's it, missing my baby working :-(

Thank you Ken. This was very interesting to me since I had the king pins done about two weeks ago, so it started me wondering!

Anyway the first thing I did this morning was to go and check this suggestion. Luckily there is no contact there , the constant velocity joint is untouched by anything with no rub marks and as far as I can tell the kingpins look fine.

If I wobble that wheel (the noisy side) when jacked up there does seem to be an enormous amount of play in the drive shaft. The other side is not so bad. I looked on Ecas and was pleasantly amused at how cheap they are, so a payday purchase coming up I guess..

Well, first prize goes to Ken.

I took off the nearside wheel and lo and behold, big ole groove in the 2cv joint.

So kingpins are a bit of a mystery to me. Has it just started slipping out? I don't really understand what keeps them in.

Bit annoying I thought the noise was coming from the wrong wheel. Not to mention spending on a new driveshaft. (Although, they were very worn.)

The kingpins rely on a press fit in the suspension arm, if this hole is worn, or the kingpin isn't the right diameter, it can make it's way up.

Hmm thanks. Well another pin is going in today so hopefully it'll work out ok. This set of pins was the third in the life of the car, so I'm hoping the hole isn't too worn.

Another pin has apparently gone in ok with the amount of resistance in the arm that would be expected. No burrs or damage int he hole can be seen by torch. So he thinks it'll be ok this time. Strange eh.
Bob actually fitted the last pair of king pins on this car approx 15 years ago and apart from being a bit worn they never gave me any trouble!
He says we'll have to see how it goes. Maybe no long distance trips for a bit then....

Would get worried if it moved again as couldn't the arm and hub separate from each other if it so loose

Surely if it is going up it won't go past the outer 2cv joint and still remain holding the arm and hub together albeit with a smaller area of overlap? Now if it was dropping out downwards that would be a different matter......
