Post Drive shaft in a tiz
Oh dear, had such a blast driving the beast around the last few days. Yesterday was noticing a slight noise going around left hand bends though, which got worse today. Definitely the drive shaft in the right side, if you turn left enough it'll aggravate it and it might keep clonking even on the straight for a bit.

I think they're just worn. They are well greased but old. I'll just get new ones I suppose, it's got 110k miles on it now. Is there anything I can do to it though to stop it clonking for now?

Sure it's the driveshaft? Often if the seams in the front wheel rust, they swell and knock aainst the bottom of the kingpin when cornering hard.

Good point, I had hoped it was that but the wheels aren't very old and no rust at all cos I smear the seams with grease.

Best check that it's not the kingpin 'climbing out' of the arm, because it's no longer a drive fit in the eye.
The Welch plug will have disappeared and the pin will be making contact with the surface of the outer constant velocity joint, maybe even gouging a groove in it, if this is the problem... :(

Thank you Ken. This was very interesting to me since I had the king pins done about two weeks ago, so it started me wondering!

Anyway the first thing I did this morning was to go and check this suggestion. Luckily there is no contact there , the constant velocity joint is untouched by anything with no rub marks and as far as I can tell the kingpins look fine.

If I wobble that wheel (the noisy side) when jacked up there does seem to be an enormous amount of play in the drive shaft. The other side is not so bad. I looked on Ecas and was pleasantly amused at how cheap they are, so a payday purchase coming up I guess..

Well it had a brand new drive shaft on the offside - both bits in case of worn splines. I picked it up earlier and as I drove away I realised no change :(

I took it out with mechanic and he is a 2cv guy but we are a bit stumped. It could be the other drive shaft I suppose.

I wonder about wheel bearing, but that doesn't really jive either. It only really does it when you turn.

When I got home it is a sharp turn right into my yard and it couldn't really do it, the scrapey knocky noise gets too bad and it feels like its catching, so I had to do it in stages.

What on earth could it be? Definitely nothing catching physically with the wing or anything. It does have the feeling similar to if the seams on the wheels were knocking but its definitely not that either. (Not very old, great condition and clearance is fine.)

The driveshaft we replaced was the one with the most apparent wear, but maybe the noise was from this other side all along :(

Is the wheel catching the steering arm?

Sure that the driveshaft isn't catching on the inner wing if it's not sitting properly in the rubber lugs?

As Chris W says having thought about it more - check the gap between tyre and suspension arm when on full lock - if the adjusters have moved then the wheel could easily foul the arm - check for wear on the inside of the tyres.
A very gloomy prospect could be that your chassis has gone and its sagging causing this to occur......

Yeah I'll have a proper gander at the driveshaft and backs of wheels of I get time tomorrow. The wings are well clear yep, I really wanted it to be just that but unfortunately not. Poor little thing.

Luckily it's had a galvanized chassis so it's not gone bendy :-)
