Just in case I've got it wrong - When I put my foot down on the clutch pedal (Race car, yes the one on the page header) I am getting an awful sound from the gearbox (going in and out of gear ok) I've ordered from Roy today a clutch release bearing so hoping this is the correct part to fix the noise!

Also how do I check the 'free play' in the cable

take the outercable near the point where it's going into floor and pull, if it comes out to far there is to much play. I can't tell how much cm is the right free play.

use one finger to press the clutch pedal down.
There should be between 20m to 25mm movement without much resistance, after which you'll need to use a lot miore pressure to depress the pedal further.

p.s. If the release bearing is worn, best check the clutch diaphragm 'fingers' as well.
If they've got a deep groove in them, it might just be time to go for a complete clutch kit...

oh well the clutch release bearing doesn't seem to have been the issue, have fitted a new clutch kit inc clutch release bearing, although at first i thought was all good now seems to be more noisier, so i think its the gearbox input shaft bearing needs replacing - is this a do it yourself EASY job or has it got to a specialist?

its easy but....
you have to take the gearbox down to its component parts as its pretty much the first thing fitted when building a box or the last out when stripping it. If your not confident stripping the box or time is tight time to give someone a call.

Hi Sean, I've got another box to put in the race car for Brands next weekend I hope that one is better than the one now sitting on the garage floor, I think I will get someone to look at it

My van makes a chuffin' squealy racket when I'm releasing the clutch to pull away/between gears. Initially I thought thrust bearing, but I'm now wondering if it might be the input shaft bearing.

Could anybody please advise, before I spend on something I don't need?

It can't be any gearbox bearing, because when you press the clutch down, everything on the gearbox (when standing still) doesn't rotate...

What condition is bushing/needle bearing on the crankshaft, where the input shaft goes? If there is bushing, and it is dry as Sahara, it can make quite strange noise...

new gearbox fitted today (I know I know) and all is quiet - the gearbox I have taken out has done 1 x 24hr Race let alone anything else it did before - even after fitting the new clutch release bearing the gearbox was getting annoyingly loud!
