When you clean up the comm only use glass paper never wet and dry, it's better if you are able to spin it and clean it up that way. Also use some spray paint on the windings that look corroded ,it's most often those at the pulley end. :D

So that hole which had been drilled for injecting lubricant, do you reckon that they blended the oil with salt water? ;)

Fair to say there's been a bit of emulsification going on!

Although it's a mess in there, the portion of the tie rods inside the cans look pretty good, so on first look I don't think things are rusty. I'll take a good look tomorrow when I clean up the gloop and assess the units' viability.

there are stainless steel tubes available in the correct size. The local mehari club changed over quite a lot of them in the 80s.

Hmm. These pipes have had it, I think. A teeny bit of prodding and holes appeared:

You can't see it very well here, but there's plenty of corrosion going on inside:

Consoled myself by doing a bit of valve lapping.

Have seen worse spring cannisters still in operation. In Liege a friend had a mehari you could see almost all spheres of the spring moving through all te holes. Car did drive nicely though ;-)

Smiffy, if it's only some isolated holes, patching them should work, as AZL57 has already advised.
Roy does still stock mild steel replacement canisters, but all the Dutch stuff seems to be going stainless now.
Going to be tough on those parts of a galvanized chassis in close contact with the stainless components if used on salted roads...

Will probably patch, Ken. There's another project in the offing, so I'll get non-stainless tubes for that one... ;)
