Post Re: Input shaft bearing replacement
Bit of an update - collected the new bearings today from a Scotia Bearings in Falkirk - really friendly and helpful service, would absolutely recommend them. £72 in total for the top rear, input shaft and both diff carrier bearings :)

As luck would have it too, just before I left to collect them I noticed that there was a gearbox specialist just a couple of miles away from the bearing company, so I took the diff with me and got them to replace the carrier bearings for me - cost me a tenner and the guy lives just a few streets away from me so he even delivered it to my house tonight so that I didn't have to wait around! I would have liked to have done all of the work myself, but I don't have a bearing puller OR a press. C'est la vie...

That's all for now - going to try and get the casing all clean and shiny tomorrow and then I'm away for a couple of days, so this can wait until my return! I'll leave you all with a picture of some obsessively organised parts

Quick question though, can I use the rear nuts again or do they need to be replaced?

You don't need either. Two large screwdrivers will usually remove the bearings. Tap the new ones on with a suitable drift.

Are you sure about that? I've always had to use a puller since the fit is rather tight. :?
p.s. The inner race of one of the old bearings makes a suitable drift...

Yes, I saw it done by Christian at the World meeting in Salbris. Rick was rebuilding our gearbox. He was having trouble, but Christian, being taller and chunkier, managed it with ease. Diff was held in a vice.

yes re use , if the staking area is a bit mashed and falls over the keyway again file a bit off the face of the nut so that you get fresh part to peen, dont go crazy just a quick rub with a flat file.

Loctite on both nuts as well, considering how many of the factory built gearboxes have those nuts just wobbling around when a gearbox is opened up.
About 90% of them, in my experience, or maybe 91%, since the one I started today had a double fail...

Bart, I'm new to gearboxes so forgive me if i'm misunderstanding, but are you meaning that loads of grey stuff came out between the inner grey ring and the golden middle one in this picture?

If so, i had a lot of crap come out from there too as I was cleaning - flakes of what seems like old gearbox oil and tiny metal grains compressed to a paste. It mostly just disintegrated when i tried to pick it up.

Sorry for the late reply, but yes that is exactly what I meant.
