Not exactly very technical i know. But is it easy to take out the rear windows? In particular I need to take out the rear quarterlight one, its got a rusty lip. And later on, the passenger side rear door one, bit of rust there too.

I'm guessing something to do with string? And I wont need a new seal afterwards will I?

I've been faffing about trying to treat the rust from inside the car where i can see it on the lip, but really it'd be much better to just pull out the window and stop the rust completely.

They're the easiest to remove, I'm a ham-fisted idiot and I've never broken one yet. I use large flat bladed screwdrivers wrapped in electrical tape so I don't damage the paint , and starting at the bottom corner nearest the door I start levering the rubber over the metal from the inside working around and up until you can just thump the window out. Takes a couple of minutes each.

And unless you're really vicious you won't need new seals, but remember to clean any rusty detritus out of them prior to refitting. You can use string to refit but for the most part you can just slot them in the opposite to removal and hook the rubber over the metal and thump them in gradually.

That was really easy. It was pretty stuck actually but out it popped after persuasion. And this is what was underneath. I knew this anyway cos I'd seen it from behind, pretty much. No wonder it leaked..I've treated it and painted it now with some Hammerite. At least it shouldn't rust much more until the summer. I may try and recreate the lip with duct tape before I put the window back in later

Quite excited that I know how to pop the windows out now - I've been watching the one on the rear passenger side door rust for a year or so now and thinking it would have to be a bodyshop thing.

I really need to do this myself. Had that area replaced early 2008 and I need to ensure it hasn't started to go again.

Hmm did you? Do you mind me asking how much that cost? I know a great guy but he is very slooooow. He would weld metal back in though.

I put the window back in, I soaked the seal in a hot bath earlier and gave it a good clean.
Had to use the string thing to get it back in which was easy. I've squidged automotive silicone in from behind on the bottom edge so that might work for now.

I forgot how unbelievably thin the metal is, isn't it funny. This summer i did some rust repairs on one of my other babies which has very thick metal, worlds apart!

I don't have a cost for specific work, I had both sides cut out and replaced during a fairly comprehensive amount of restoration work from December 2007 to April 2008. Here's a couple of photos from one side.....

Thanks. Wow, big job there then. Luckily this piece has made me realise why it is bubbling below there where the window has been leaking, thats where the water goes. So I should be able to save that bit below.
