Re: Electronic ignition - to be or not to be.... Well folk, that certainly got the tongues and brain cells going... thanks. I didn't realise that I'd asked such 'a good question' - as with previous vehicles I agree, with points that are set up correctly and I haven't noticed any difference either, between the conventional set up and the black box, but with this engine the access and adjustment is a lot better than some car distributors but the fan removal is a pain. I'm getting a 25mm x 150mm steel bar, turned down to 19.8mm on the last 25mm, as I write, because smacking the fan boss (and crank) with a socket extension, that is not a great fit, bothers me, sooner or later something is going to suffer.... Thanks for the views and suggestions, this already feels like an informative forum to be part of.

Re: Electronic ignition - to be or not to be.... Shocking the fan off is the recognised way to do it, I've never seen one damaged by doing this.

Re: Electronic ignition - to be or not to be.... My fan was a total bee-otch when I had to smack it off. But its fine now, I've had it off a couple of times since. Its just that the last time it was off was a long time ago when the points were last changed, so it needed a lot of smacking and I was really worried about breaking it. It lived though  I've not tried the electronic ignition, I thought about it but the car has always run so well theres been no need to change. Once only, I had trouble, it had new points and was fine again. Once only in abut 16 years is pretty good I thought, so I left well alone.

As suggested by Wiltz to me (tried and it worked) get the fan off, then put a bit of valve lapping paste on the crank taper. gently hold the fan on the taper as the engne is turning to smooth everything off, then clean and copper grease it on refitting. The lightest clonk with a hammer frees it now.
This is obviously only a suggestion, as i can imagine it going wrong and fingers flying everywhere.
