Searched for this topic but couldn't find it so apologies in advance if it is well covered - please point me @ it.
I have alternator, battery, regulator, motors various, bulbs... but what (probably one of the 'whats' if I'm honest...) I'm not sure about is the fuel gauge & sender. I can change the gauge easily, if I must, but what about the tank sender unit? I imagine it's just a rehostat & wiper, will a 6v one work with 12v

I am doing my Traction at the moment and I have redrawn the wiring diagram with a 6 volt section to run the fuel gauge, dash lights and wiper motor. The fuel sender is in the same circuit too but this does not really matter, be it 12 or 6 volts.

I have bought a tiny 12 volt to 6 volt converter that I will connect from the 12 volts switched circuit (ignition switch) and then the output will feed an isolated 6 volt circuit feeding the wiper motor (a 6 will not work on 12, well not for very long anyway) and the fuel gauge (as it is difficult to change on the Traction as it is part of the speedo etc).

The starter motor will stay at 6volt though as this should be OK for a while, but I always hear about how they burn out and then the next conversation will be, they will last forever...

The converter I used I got off amazon - type in Vktech converter and a bunch will pop up, I have the smaller 5amp version.

Thanks Ian most helpful, hadn't thought of dual voltage. I suppose I could run two 6v batteries in series and take 12v from the pair for lights, starter etc. & 6v from one for all the rest? Would that work...?

I had vaguely heard that there was away of connecting a resistance across the the terminals of the fuel gauge which would allow the 6v gauge to read correctly on 12v but have no idea what the value would be or how to work it out...

The converter is about £5 so not a lot of money.

Dual 6 volt batteries is heavy but they do do a dual tap battery where you can take 6 volt from the middle of the array. But these are expensive.

Thanks again! I take it from the dia. that 6 & 12v are quite happy sharing the same earth? Just a matter of making sure there is no stray 12v getting into the 6v any where I like this approach a lot.
I guess as I'm changing complete engine/gearbox to achieve this I could power everything off this type of converter (suitably rated of course) initially to reduce the down time (Gerty is my everyday transport) & shift up the various bits as & when... maybe...

regarding fuel gauge - I just left the 6v Sender and gauge and run it on 12v. Been OK for the last 18 months. Probably burn out tomorrow. The windscreen wiper I just put a 12v headlamp bulb in series with the motor. Changed bulbs for all the rest.

Oh, and don't forget the clonker in the indicator stalk. I cut mine out and used a 12v flasher relay thingy.
