Well, upon reflection, making a gizmo like Keza's was beyond a) any bits of steel I have lying around, b) my skill levels and c) my patience! So I ground off the tatty hinge thing, cut off the rotten bit, and then welded a new piece on. Here's what I made, with some holes drilled ready for plug welding:

Then I welded it on and put some rust treatment on it (which turns the metal an amazing shade of blue before it cures):

Next up I finished doing some wee patches on the nearside floor and rust treated the floor (top and bottom) and the nearside A-panel:

All-in-all, a bit of a faff, but worth it, and stays in keeping with my aim of retaining as much of the original as possible.

Put some high-build primer on the newly rustproofed bits on Monday evening. Went and checked them on Friday night (ie four days later) and they're still tacky! Painting in the winter is such a pain! Maybe I should concentrate on thoroughly rust proofing and then wait until the spring before I do the paint job.

This stuff's meant to be a good bare-metal protector while it waits for the warmer conditions http://www.gibbsbrandeurope.com.
Anyone on here got any experience of it, or tips on an alternative product I could use?

Similar to this stuff I guess http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00G ... H9GTT962VX which is brilliant, stops aircraft corroding on aircraft carriers.

Had a spare hour so I went and chucked some topcoat on anyway. The undercoat had dried, so that was good!

Couple of quick questions.
1. Anyone know where I can get a cheap valve spring compressor that will definitely fit my 2CV engine? I've just tried to use mine (sat in a box for years, since I did the job on an old Saab 96) and it won't fit! I just had a look at Roy's and regrettably they're a bit beyond Sir's budget.
2. Is there any need to use gasket sealant when re-assembling a 2CV engine?
