Post Re: Electric fan debate
This is something I played with also.
It was good in theory but that was all.
I bought the biggest electric fan I could find, like Petes pics, and at wide open throttle the temps just kept creeping up.
It has been pointed out to me that the design of the 2cv fan is to push air outward, towards cylinder heads, not through, towards point box ;-) I believe this is also why an electric fan fails, as its blades are very shallow, in all the applications I have seen them used they point directly on to the surface to be cooled.

Question back.... Does anybody know at which speed you wouldn't need a fan at all,

lets say cruising around
driving on motorway
driving fully loaded

or do you always need a fan in an otherwise original engine...??

Fix a Cylinder Head temp gauge or even better log with a PC +(GPS)
Also note ambient temp.

Drive a known route with the fan On.... then without fan (You will need a pulley to run the Alt).
As NL is flatter than UK... fully load the car

ps Take the pulley with Fan with you on your trip

I have a graph some were will post if I find it...

nearly always - at idle you have 10 minutes or so before stuff starts to smell really hot

about 15 yrs ago Cris Scott in Aus played about with oil temp sensor and speed/petrol octane the only time the oil got to below recomended running temp ( >90*C) was partial throttle on flat open highway, this would be the only time the standard fan would be over cooling the engine but not by much. Its also borne out by our findings on race cars running cyl head temperature gages. A shattered fan takes less than a minute before the engine starts pinking, again borne out on the race track by engines not fitted with cyl head temp warning device.

The only time it'd be an advantage would be winter warm up in Northern areas - the only time id ever experienced an over cool engine was the year my part of the country remained at -10C for a week, but if that happened regularly Id have a full under tray and engine bay insulation rather than a potentially engine wrecking toy. VW have the engine cooling fan on the alternator belt and they regularly cook no3 piston or worse.

The only time id consider an electric fan would be to SUPPLEMENT the engine driven one if i had to drive in traffic in Southern Europe/N Africa, as sitting with the engine at idle in high ambient temps is the only time the crank driven fan was insufficient.

Just sayin'
