What is the view on Electric Fans operated by a thermostat.
Release of horsepower maybe
Quicker warm up
Keeps running after engine has stopped so better cooling of heads etc.
Does anyone know the output of the current fan and is it possible to get that output from electric?

why change something simple (which works just fine) for something complicated (which will destroy your engine the first time it doesn't function as intended)?

I've been thinking about this and i'm certainly going to try it, maybe with the fan of a CX (just because i've got it laying around) probably coupled to a cylinder head temperature thermostat.
A temp sensor/gauge could prevent serious engine damage, and if it fails on a trip you can replace the mechanical fan.
The standard fan could also kill your engine if it shears of and rips your oil cooler.
But Ken is just right (as always ), for simplicity just keep it original, if you've got the right type of mechanical fan, chances are very small that it breaks.

A 2cv fan may use 1 or 2 bhp which you will gain if you use an Electric fan.
BUT when the engine is working hard, that 1 or 2 bhp WILL cool the engine as designed.

The biggest 12volt fan @ 14 inches about 70 watts or about 0.1 bhp ie No match
I have hane had electric fan for off road reasons.

I did a Graph of engine temp over a hilly road route with the Electric/Standard fan.

The engine runs MUCH hotter +20deg C of the uphill bits which means the oil was probably over temp.

The fan belt pulley/hub thingy will still have to be left on the end of the crankshaft to operate the alternator,so I personally cant see where there would be any gain .....also,do the 2CV racing fraternity use electric fans? ....or is it against the rules? ......I would have thought that the racers would have picked up any advantage to be gained if its possible.

With 1-2-Spark I can fire an electrical fan. 1-2-Spark already has a temp sensor at the heatexchanger so programming a fan on temperature and a fan off temperature which you can tune would be no problem.. Ofcourse the diffrence between on and off needs to be at least 5 degrees otherwise it will go on and off all day.....

and sorry Ken I never do understand those words, everyone drives in a modern car with electronics all over the place and everybody relays on it, but in a 2cv it suddenly doesn't work???? You probably live in a cave do you???

I'm relaying on electronics for ignition (and injection) for the last 5 years and besides the 2 times I srewed up my wirering (do to my own fault) it never misses a single beat... If I had done the same distance on points I would be on my 5. set of points and condensor at this time...

I think I have saved 500 liters of petrol over this time and about the same amount of LPG.... (probably more) thanks to electronic ignition and injection in my A-types.

Putting in an electric fan would bring another 5 to 10 percent less fuel-consumtion, so if we can find the right electrical fan, count me in to use it....

Been done, fan controlled by a temperature switch on the cylinder head (@120deg C).
Removed it when car used on the road....
