with a bit of fiddeling you can use a modern alternator+ regulator, done that on a 425

You just need to be sure the belt wheels are lined up properly...

Probably the way forward in the end..

Seems a silly question but is it OK to use a modern 2cv regulator with the original 12v alternator?

It is not uncommon to see a M4 with modern 12V alternator, but I am not sure if it is possible to use it with old 12V regulator or the other way around.
At least for the big 6V alternator you need a specific regulator with it.

It doesn.t work these old alternators (looking like a starter engine) are direct current. The neew ones are alternating current so it is a complete diffrent system. In my opinion at the old one the magnetic field is regulated not the current...

Isn't that because those 'starter motor shaped' generators are actually dynamos?

As long as the car had an alternator fitted at the factory, or the wiring loom has been altered to suit an alternator, there's no reason why a later type of alternator cannot be used, is there? :?

I guess you are right Ken, but in Dutch theres only 1 wordt for a generator, dynamo, alternator... In Dutch everything which sits on an engine is called a dynamo, be it ac dc or whatever.....

As I understand ru has an old dynamo (DC) and he can't find a new one... The easiest way is to fit in a new alternator (AC) and a new regulator....

Ru take care that even if you find an old dynamo, it has to match with the regulator otherwise it won't work, there are several internet sites where you can see which dynamo's and regullaters match and which don't.....

Hope my Dutch ==> google ==> English is correct this way Ken.....

Sorry for any confusion... It's an alternator not a dynamo. So I guess my question of compatible regulators was a bit stupid as in theory a 2cv regulator should work fine with my alternator. The Ami is late 1967.

Now you're talking Ken. A Vincent powered 2cv. Just love the distinctive sound of a Vincent.
