 Re: Throttle problem
Could well be the accelerator pump. When you suddenly open the throttle wide, the mixture gets very lean for a second or two, and the accelerator pump is designed to deliver a single "shot" of neat fuel to counteract this. If you remove the rubber hose between the carburettor and the air filter, and look at the carburettor bore closest to the front of the engine, you'll see a brass pipe protruding about an inch into the centre of the bore. With the engine stopped, open the throttle and you should see a fairly healthy squirt of fuel from the end of that pipe downwards into the carb. If there's nothing at all, or it's a bit "misty", that's probably your problem.
Another possibility is just a slightly weak idle mixture, especially if it's been leaned off for an MOT or something, but your issue looks a bit too severe for that to me...

 Re: Throttle problem
can be the other way round with too much fuel being dumped into the manifold
get the timing spot on get the exhaust leak sorted check for induction leaks especially the carb base block set up the carb see idle problems "no tick over" on here in a recent thread.

 Re: Throttle problem
Swapped the pump for the one the spare engine, now revs fine. Still dies at the end of the accelerator pedal travel, is the cable just in need of adjustment?
