Dampers/loose damper mounting plates, knackered kingpins or knackered track rod ends. Usually one of those.

I had the same problem on my '88 spesh. ......in my situation it turned out to be the track rod end "ball" which had worn a little.......there was no aparent wear on it [making it oval] so I simply greased it & tightened it up. One word of warning .......when you replace the splitpin, replace it the same way that it was fitted [with the "U" part of the splitpin on the inside of the threaded tube/castelated nut] .....I inadvertently fitted mine the wrong way round, and the problem returned after about 20 miles.

Personal advice - stop driving it immediately. I had same problem, I pretty much ignored it like the penis I am, it vibrated so much that it sheared off the bolts that hold the track rod end lever arm onto the hub. Result, no steering, and very close to a head on. Turned out to be buggered rack. Also needed new pants, trousers, seat and steam cleaning of interior.

With a knackered kingpin I experienced exactly what you describe, the juddering and vibrations at the front. With no rear shock absorbers I experienced bouncy rear wheels, lack of grip and juddering, made the car horrid to drive. nodmoz wrote: Personal advice - stop driving it immediately. Probably sound advice until you've isolated the problem. Check your shock absorbers by jumping on the bumpers. The car should go down and bob back up without bouncing. If you get the boingy boingy clown car effect your shocks have had it. Check the kingpins, jack up the front and have a wiggle, up and down as well as side to side. If it's not either of those look at the track rod ends and rack.

Probably worth mentioning that it can the combined wear in various steering components which allows enough free movement for that uncontrollable oscillation to occur; you will need to check kingpins, track rod ends as well as rack slider and pinion for free play.

Wouldn't go jumping up and down on the bumpers as this tends to put chuffin great dents in them or even shear them off the mounts if they're rusty.....
