I don't think that Russ said it wouldn't hold bits of metal together, which - by the sound of it - is the definition of "getting away with it" being used. Let's face it - pop rivets can be used to hold bits of metal together, and there's plenty of "restorers" who have long "got away with" using them.

A handful of dogshit is cheaper than a nice steak but you wouldn't eat it because its wholly unsuitable for the task.
I'm not sure I understand why paint would fall off? Like saying you've swapped from using engine oil to using orange squash instead and the paint hasn't peeled off yet. No, maybe not, but it's still a shit plan.

 Re: mig wire "gas free?
What really gets me is all this who is wrong and who is right. Does it really matter whether someone is using gassless or not. The main game is to be able to weld regardless of what is being used. I have no problems with professional gear or DIY gear. If a person needs a small welding job once in a blue moon, why on earth should he buy or rent an expensive solution. A small gassless machine will do the job. So let people do what the want to do (unless it is outright madness) What I meant about paint is. Some people believe that residue from gassless welding may cause primer and/or paint to lift if not cleaned properly.

Anybody who says otherwise is completely and utterly wrong and doesn't know what they're talking about. I am completely and utterly wrong then and don't know what I'm talking about, despite using it every day. Yes it looks shit but none of my welding joints has ever separated. As a one off welding repair, go for it. Well what I don't understand is why somebody would ask advice then do the opposite of what they're told. If somebody popped up here and said "Hi, I understand its possible to shove a pineapple up my arse, should I do it", then received plenty of advice explaining why they shouldn't, then you'd think them something of a buffoon when they posted photos later in of the shoddy results. Why anybody would recommend this dreadful practice is beyond me. It simply does not produce a satisfactory result due to the fact it's utterly unsuitable for the task at hand. You're better off with a disposable bottle if you only weld once in a blue moon, you get a better result even with one of those dreadful little hobbymig things.

People are free to do with the advice they get. BTW what is a ''better result''

Deuteronomy 23:1 reads (this is the God's Word translation, which spells it out better), "A man whose testicles are crushed or whose penis is cut off may never join the assembly of the Lord."

Well there you go then. All the skilled professionals are wrong and one bloke with no industry qualifications knows best. Maybe you'd like to come to work with us and tell us where else we're all going wrong.

In this case a small welding job done with gassless. I'm not suggestion any professional using gassless 24/7 it would be the ''wrong solution''
