So gearbox breather is key! Will make sure I do this mod aswell then. Might add a drain back though so the oil pumped out drains back in.

Is this mod only required on BMW engines etc because of higher rpm/ top speed? Or is it recommended on normal 2cv's? Jusr wandering as never had problem with mine or previous Dyane.. :?: :?:

Mod's done to mine:

- breather to catch tank
- a good condition input shaft
- shaft modified for seal (I think ken did mine when rick built it for me)
- dyane diff
- baffles also added although this was more for cornering
- using shockproof gear oil (it's more waxy than oily)
- standard valeo clutch

has been excellent and no problems so far. It only failed originally as i think gear oil was working its way up the scroll return & throwing itself over the clutch.

Rick built this for me in a very short time (I was in a rush as always) and reasonably priced. I'd recommend his services if you can't do it yourself.

On a 2cv the box will breathe through the shift tower and the small drilling in the lid make sure its clear

what kills the scroll on the input is a worn pilot bearing in the back of the crank ( replacement a couple of ££ from any bearing supplier) or a failing input bearing ( again a few£ from a bearing supplier - but you do have to pull the box to its component parts to fix)

once the scroll has lost its bite then high revs with a 2cv box will have oil emerging from the front of the box

News to me...
Anyhow, will find out soon enough as the input shaft for one of the UK entries at Spa is heading this way for me to fit a seal.
Last time I fitted one for this team, they managed 3rd place using a 2CV gearbox, whereas the GS boxes they'd used previously always caused serious problems.

All Mehari 4x4 front and back gearboxes have standard breathing with hoses on it; about 50cm high and a petrol filter at the end, so nothing new there...

I think Sub Pete is rght here
2x the Power then 2x the Heat, so oil gets very thin and wants to escape through all holes....

Going to Spa Franchorchamps this year (again). I'm going to take a good look at the beamers and which mods they make to them.....
