hi sig it will be much quieter once the correct tubes are fitted and some floor covering too...

Certainly will, the thicker the carpet the better! There should also be some soundproofing on the inside of the bulkhead and under the bonnet, which'll help too.

Also, using the (correct) mineral oil in the engine quietens down things too, part or fully synthetic is too thin and these engines were not made for it.

Oh yes, you'll need to rev it - don't worry, they love it - and make good use of momentum and the gears to maintain speed. They are surprisingly brisk once you get the hang of all this.

Fabulous work, by the way. I've really enjoyed watching this 2cv being reborn. Well done.

<cough>ollocks.

Oil which is too thin is too thin, regardless of the base stock.
Oil of the right viscosity is not too thin, regardless of the base stock.

Fair enough.

But the fact remains that these engines were designed when mineral oil in car engines was the norm so it makes perfect sense then to use the correct oil doesn't it.

I used semi synthetic once, thinking that it might benefit the engine a little but experienced oil usage, small oil leaks and extra engine noise. A change back to fully mineral oil largely cured all this. Other 2cv owners I've talked with, including a well known 2cv mechanic here in Sussex, all say best to use mineral oil".

It would, if there were any negative effects from using more modern oils. But there aren't. The only differences in practice are better lubrication for longer, especially when temperatures get high. Given that our engines are oil-cooled as much as air-cooled, it seems a no-brainer to use the best quality you can get, especially now that minerals tend to be very bargain-bucket quality, apart from ferociously expensive "specials" marketed to classic owners.

Was it the same viscosity, though, or were you using oil that was too thin?

I run mine on semi synthetic having taken advice from ECAS when I first thought about using it.

If it were me living in a hot country with a 70's car with a slightly clattery old engine 20w50 mineral would be my oil of choice to quieten things down a bit.

Now where's that argument thread gone? :D

a semi** synth " diesel" oil is the way*

lets take it over to the "fight" thread

*
Synthetic oil isnt thinner unless you buy the thinner stuff.
Diesel oil has more of the minerals that inhibit wear than petrol stuff as petrol oil has it all taken out as it messes up the cats.
Diesel oil has a higher detergent so the crap is carried in the oil for the filter to do its job.
Dirt in the engine does not make it oil tight - your oil wont piss out because your engine is cleaner internally - if it does the the mechanical part that keeps the oil in needs looking at - seals and breathers folks
It also keeps its condition better as our old engines work over a greater temperature range and so the oil needs to be better than cheap "itll do" brand.

having said that ANY clean oil is better than old dirty expensive stuff

**fully synth is just expensive and im Scottish

Quite.

By the way, I was only after a five minute arguement, not the full half hour.
