Let's hope that's all it was and not another dose of mangled/crushed pushrod tubes... :(

Maybe we need a 'step by step' guide for refitting cylinder heads, including a mention of leaving the rockers and pushrods off until the head is seated correctly?

does it make a difference the position of the crank when putting the heads back on, one side was far easiler than the other, maybe I should have turned the crank 180 degrees??

At a guess, the easy side had the cam lobes so that both valves were closed, whilst the difficult one you were compressing a valve spring.

yes we do ken please !- its been redone and the plugs were upside down I think so they weren´t sealing the hole well, the tubes seems to be ok: I don´t understand the shape of the rubber seals though, the ones I have have an internal lip a half moon shape..I assumed that was at the bottom of the hole for more errr.. protection, but no, because they are not left and right handed so I just put them in so they plug the hole better as the rods are not centred within the rubber??. seems to work better now though

anyway, all that was dwarfed by the rush of happiness I got when the wipers started working!! :D :D :D

ignition now comes from the key (it was the pinky coloured wire in the end) and I now have lights, indicators and wipers. no brake lights (the switch is dead) or horn yet, but a big advance.

rewelded the shortened gearlever height, and just need to raise the pedal box a bit and we´re ready for the steering UJ

ok quick update, yesterday was tricky, the pedal box needed raising!, first the brake oil container was seized onto the pump, making life very difficult, after finally discovering how it all went together without breaking anything the master cylinder support was shaved and raised . again the 2cv triangle bulkhead comes back to haunt and cause problems with the angles and distances for the clutch. so all that had to be redone and reinforced also. in the end it came out ok, but If I do it again it would be thought out more beforehand.

clutch pedal was altered a bit also for more distance from the steering column.

after sorting everything I tried the clutch and gearbox, and it moved under its own steam for 6 m back and forth out of the garage! :D :D

remember no steering or brakes as yet, so had to keep moving the wheels by hand to keep it straight.

this morning a relatively easy job of the new rear bumper bracket, which is now on.

still waiting on the UJ´s !

kids come back on wednesday morning so this is my penultimate hassle free day!

With all the work you have done is the chassis repaired? Will it pass MOT over there to get it on the road?

ok so first impressions. this is the first time I´ve been in a working 2cv let alone drive one from a scrap yard . I´m not too sure whats normal!

noise..lots of it from the engine, although nothing nasty sounding it is pretty noisy, the heating tubes arnt in yet so the heat and noise from the engine goes straight inside, I suppose it´ll get less when the tubes are on??

heat...despite windows and vent being open it gets hot in there.

power....what power!..I suppose this is normal I´m used to a 150hp 2 litre!..

gearbox..seems to be quite smooth, and I´m getting used to it, 1st gear is ridiculously low ratio?

speed..managed to get to 70km/h so far...no massive wobbles or anything..god knows how I´ll get it to 100?

engine revs..perhaps the weirdest thing..used to 3500 revs being a lot, but I´m guessing this engine needs to be at higher revs to get going...everyone says 6000 - 7000 is normal!

cold start..rough as you like when cold, choke works ok and soon warms up

speed bumps..no major issues...but need to fix the bump stop on the rear left..

the biggest surprise is the noise issue...no chance of a stereo in there, how do people do it?? (I have a full metal floor also, and no carpets!

summary..great fun..love seeing over the skinny bonnet, good turning circle.will have to raise the ride height a tad, and maybe stiffen the dampers

ps chris, yes chassis was repaired and well stiffened. I don´t foresee problems with the ITV, they generally seem pleased when anything odd comes in!
and yes thanks the gearbox oil was replaced (900 cc)

hi sig it will be much quieter once the correct tubes are fitted and some floor covering too
it seems very low at the rear :?:
is it a 602 engine?

sig,
only if you like replacing engines fairly often, since 6,000 rpm was Citroen's recommended maximum for 602cc engines and peak power was at 5,750 ( a bit less for the earlier versions of the 602).

Also might be worth checking which ratios your gearbox has.
If it's 2CV4/Dyane4/AZU, the overall ratios will be lower, as the 435cc engine was the only one which produced its peak power at higher rpm, 6,750 to be precise...

Had to have a chat with the guys in the pit next to us they couldnt believe they could get 7500rpm out the engine - suggested they had a 6000rpm hard rev limit and explained that the car wouldn't necessarily go faster revving the nuts off it - low and behold in within 5 mins for a fan. once they calmed it down a bit the oil leak mysteriously went away too. Think they did an engine in the pre race messing about
