I see that there are two types of headlight units available for the 2cv.
The original type is around £130 a pair.
There are some cheaper ones about at half that price.
Any comments on the difference?
Can be false economy to go for the cheapest sometimes I know.

They've both got problems in my opinion.
The lens on the cheapo ones is wrong for right hand drive and I find the reflectors on the expensive ones corrode in no time.
Typical of the crap parts we generally have to suffer nowadays.

The last pair I used were made up from cheapo reflectors with the original lenses fitted.
(Easy to remove the old lenses with a bit of heat). I think I had to do something minor with the way the bulb fits into the reflector too.

I purchased the the correct Valeo/Cibie units on a recommendation from the parts peddler that the reflectors in the cheaper one are shit, and also incorrect dip for RHD vehicles. I also spent a shite load of time searching for an alternative, which I never found...
I'm pleased with the purchase!
There is also this ADAPTER to fit more modern H4 bulbs with higher output.

Why do you need an adapter?

NB: Fitting higher wattage bulbs than standard for your car may increase the load on other components in the lighting circuits, such as wiring, switches, etc, so it may be necessary to fit relays in the main and dip circuits.  If you are not sure, please consult an expert.  In all cases we would advise that electrical circuits, components and connections are kept in good condition.
* PLEASE NOTE:  80/100w & 90/100w bulbs may not be legal for road use.  Our 80/100w and 90/100w main bulbs are 'NOS' (new, old-stock) items.  We only have a few left and may not get any more.  We will however continue to stock new 55/60w halogen bulbs, (white and yellow).

Any higher than 55/60w will also compromise the life of the reflector.
Look at the Phillips range of 100%+ h4 I run them in my DS with great results.

Your are correct Harley the high wattage bulbs are illegal for road use, again your are quite right re the use of relays,which are must along with uprated wiring to feed the headlights,to get the best from them. I also have a pair of 55w driving lamps all in all it's almost like daylight with everything on.Great round or local lanes in France .

Thanks for the comments so far. I would like to go for the correct units. Last time I looked, a while back, they were "only" £45.00, which I thought was dear enough. My existing units are still serviceable but I can see signs of corrosion creeping in. Perhaps I had better get a pair for the winter before they go up to £100.00
Just thrown away the second pair of cracked plastic headlamp shells and managed to find a good pair of steel ones.
